Addie the Lap Dog

I don't know about your pit bulls but Addie is almost 10 months old and still LOVES sitting in peoples laps. Not only does she love sitting in peoples laps, she loves being picked up and carried around which is quite difficult to do now that she is about 50 pounds. I manage though...
I took some pictures of her that I wanted to share with you all. I hope you enjoy!

My twin sister Amber and Addie!

Kisses!

I have always loved her eyes. When we got her they were a beautiful blue!

Insert Expletives Here

So pit bull lovers, I don't know how many of you came across this treasure of a story but I must blog about it. Today I did my usually Pit Bull search on google and this was the top story, Pit Bull Shooting Caught on Camera. I clicked on the article and then read the tagline... Firefighters heard laughing after dog shot by police. This sent quite a bit of anger through me but I read on. Apparently the dog had attacked two people and the firefighters/police came to help. When they got there the Pit Bull was still running loose, trapping the firefighters in their vehicles. The police officer shoots at the dog, the bullet grazing his face. While this is going on the firefighters are having a grand old time capturing the moment on their cell phones. If you read the article you can view video but they show only before the dog was shot and after. After is when you can hear all of the firefighters laughing and cracking jokes about the dog. Hearing them laugh about it made me so angry and sad. I cannot believe ANYONE could laugh about something like that. It's so awful. The Pit Bull was believed to be a stray and is being tested for rabies. It was euthanized later in the day.

Am I angry about the police officer shooting the dog? No...I mean if it really was dangerous, I guess that's what he had to do but it's not the least bit funny. Not one bit.

Pit Bull the Rapper

First of all, I am sorry I haven't posted in a few days! I have been busy trying to get things situated for grad school and it is more difficult than I thought it would be! Plus, I went to see the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at Ravinia on Saturday and on Sunday I was in St. Louis. Busy Busy Busy!

Above is the Cuban American rapper Armando Christian Perez with his two "lady friends." You may be wondering why I am even wasting your time with this, but, I am because of his stage name. Armando Perez is better known as Pit Bull. I have heard about him a little bit but not much. Apparently he has a new album coming out soon but that isn't what interests me. I want to know why he came to pick his infamous stage name. So, I did some research. It honestly took awhile to find the answer to what I was looking for. I went to his official site and it said nothing about his reasoning for picking Pit Bull as his stage name. Finally, I ran across this article in the Washington Post. It's quite a long article but I skimmed through it and finally found what I was looking for...and I what I read, didn't please me.

"He attacks his work with ferocity. He dubbed himself "Pitbull" because, he says, "they bite to lock. The dog is too stupid to lose. And they're outlawed in Dade County. They're basically everything that I am. It's been a constant fight."

He gives three reasons as to why he has chosen the name Pit Bull and they are all NEGATIVE things about our loving creatures. One of the reasons is a false myth! He doesn't choose the name because Pit Bulls are dedicated and intelligent creatures, he chooses it because they are "stupid" and "outlawed." It is obvious that he is uneducated about Pit Bulls and that is really too bad. Hopefully, someday, he will learn how great these dogs really are and will support his stage name with positive responses about how loyal and intelligent the dogs are.

Pit Bull Killed in Kewanee Meth Lab Raid

As I was reading the news paper this morning I came across the headline Pit Bull Killed in Kewanee Meth Lab Raid. I immediately read the article expecting to read about some "viscious" Pit Bull but to my surprise this was the only statement about the Pit Bull.

"A Pit Bull inside the residence was killed by the entry team, Chief Dison said. No injuries were reported to officers or the apartments occupants. "

That. Was. It.

The rest of the article goes on to describe the four people arrested, what they found in the home, and jail and bail information. There was no reason to why the Pit Bull was killed. Did the entry team go in and shoot the dog for no reason? Was the dog attacking? We have no idea.

I can't figure out for the life of me WHY the article was even entitled the way it was. This article was obviously more about the raid then the Pit Bull being killed since there was only two sentences about the Pit Bulls death. Why wasn't it named Four Arrested after Kewanee Meth Lab Raid? To me it seems that the writer of the article thought the Pit Bull being killed was more attention getting than the actual raid its self. These are things that drive me crazy. I can't figure it out.

I'd like to know your thoughts and opinions about this. Am I over-reacting?

Unacceptable Behavior

This evening was pretty rough for me. I got in a really big fight with my mom and all I wanted to do was see Addie because she always makes me feel better. I mean, she's an adorable Pit Bull, how could she not cheer me up! To catch anyone up, Addie belongs to my boyfriend and I and we don't live together. That means when I am at home, she's not with me. So unfortunately, there was no adorable Pit Bull to cheer me up. Instead, I went down to walk by the river. (I live right on the Mississippi.) I walked around for a bit and then decided to sit down and watch the geese as well as the dog walkers go by. I was sitting there HOPING to see a Pit Bull. After about 5 minutes, from around the corner, I saw a white Pit Bull walking my way with it's owner and another dog. Well, I was happy to see the dogs, but the owner was a MESS. The geese were all lined up and she was just mesmerized by them. Of course she had to pull out her cell phone to get a picture. While this was going on, her dogs are pulling on their leashes and jumping on people. What does she do? SHE KEEPS TAKING PICTURES. Then another dog walker starting walking by and the Pit Bull started barking like crazy and pulling even harder on the leash to try to get to the other dog. You think she'd attempt to do something about it. No. The lady is now texting. Are you kidding me?! As I said, she had two dogs with her and in the commotion of barking and pulling, her dogs started fighting with each other. FINALLY the gets her attention and she puts her phone away, separates the dogs, smacks the Pit Bull in the mouth a few times, and then returns to staring at the geese. Now, I have a little sympathy for her. I mean it's difficult to walk Addie because she gets so excited to meet people and other dogs so were similar in that way. Addie also likes to try and jump and pull BUT I never would sit there and text and let my dog jump on people. The whole situation was unacceptable and frustrating to me. She's a reason why people think Pit Bulls are out of control and can't be trained. I'm a shy person and I figured it was none of my business so I didn't say anything to her, but, I kind of wish I would have. I hope she gets ahold of herself and starts taking care of her dogs instead of worrying about less important things.

I'd Like You to Meet, I'd Like You to Meet, I'd Like You to Meet: Please send some in! The reason I started that post is so that when Pit Bull haters or lovers come to the blog they would get a chance to read about some of your wonderful well behaved Pit Bulls. I want to convince readers that Pit Bulls are good. I could write about how Addie is a great dog every week, but I think it would be more believable if I had some other fine pooches to write about! Like YOURS! :)

Pit Bull-less

Folks, I am currently Pit Bull-less. If you haven't noticed, I am only 22 years old, just graduated college, and my boyfriend and I (who own her) don't live together. SO that means when I am at home, Addie is not with me. Now, I would bring her home with me BUT, it's not allowed, not because of her breed or anything but because we already have two pets here and my grandpa won't allow anymore. Also, what you may not know is, I am moving to Chicago in exactly 32 (I'm not excited at all...) days. I am about to start my masters degree at Roosevelt University. This means LONG DISTANCE RELATIONSHIP with Addie. I'm not fond of the idea but I have to deal with it. When I get in these sorts of situations where I won't see her for a couple weeks, I always find myself looking at all my pictures of her. I thought today, SINCE I STILL DON'T HAVE A PITTIE TO WRITE ABOUT FOR I'D LIKE YOU TO MEET, I would show some of my favorite pictures of her!

Pittie Quotes

I have always been a fan of finding quotes that relate to how I feel. It was the thing to do back when I was in junior high and I still like doing it from time to time. Today I decided to look up Pit Bull quotes and it was not very successful. There just aren't many Pittie quotes out there, but, this is what I did find. Enjoy!

Top Ten Reasons Why You Can't Trust Vicious Pit Bulls

10. They will steal your spot on the couch while you are up getting a soda.
9. They will take the treat you give them and bury in the back yard like a paranoid crack head hiding their stash.
8. They will jump on your bed with muddy feet. Making you do the laundry...again!
7. They will lick visitors with an uncontrolled passion only they understand.
6. They will cause children to smile.
5. They will make you feel horrible for not walking them by looking at you with deep sad eyes.
4. They will look at you like you committed a crime against them if you don't let them lick your ice cream bowl.
3. They will cause wide spread happiness in large group settings.
2. They will crack you up by shaking their butts so hard you think they are going to snap in half.

And the number one reason why you can't trust vicious Pit Bulls...
1. They will steal your heart like a thief in the night, showing you complete and pure love that only a Pit Bull can show.

The Monster
I see the children in the park,
My master lets me play with them,
I love them and they love me, we play together happily,

Until their mother comes and says
Children stay away from those monsters, they eat children like you!
And she takes them away, and I wonder who the monster is
Then it hits me,
She is talking about me.

A spirited Pit Bull
Shares my days,
And makes my life complete.
Intelligent and protective,
Yet affectionate and sweet.

A strong willed dog,
So fast and quick-
With courage and self pride.
I can’t imagine life without
My Pit Bull by my side.

Active and adventurous,
A dog that loves to play-
My Pit Bull puts the sunshine
Into each and every day.

On the Road Again

Currently I am sitting in the car on my way to Indiana. It's a four hour trip so I thought I would blog in the car and post it when I find some internet. So speaking of traveling. How do you all take your dogs in the car? Currently Addie is in the other car in her cage. She seems to be doing fine, she's relaxed but drooling, A LOT. When she gets nervous she drools…

If you read my frustrations entry from a couple of days ago you read about my frustrations with my boyfriends grandmother. The frustration continues. Just about every day we hear a story about a Pit Bull mauling some one. This is yesterdays story. Apparently the Pit Bull jumped the fence and attacked the girl for no reason. In my opinion there is always a reason. Maybe the dog was outside for too long. Maybe the girl was taunting the dog. There are a number of reasons why the dog could have been in such an aggravated state. These questions just can't be answered. I mean no disrespect to the injured girl but I can't believe that the dog attacked for no reason. There is always a reason for why Pit Bulls or ANY OTHER DOG attacks.

How about some good Pit Bull stories. Below are three links to three different great Pit Bull stories! These were sent to me by a nice emailer! I hope you all enjoy.

Two Entries in One

Today you are getting a two-for-one deal! Two entries in one...enjoy!

Just Another Day with a Pit Bull

Addie has been WAY over due for a nail clipping. For awhile my boyfriend and I were cutting them ourselves and it actually was going well. Now we're just getting lazy so we decided to take her in. Well we called and made an appointment BUT because she is a Pit Bull Brett had to be in the room when it was being done. When they arrived (I wasn't there) Brett was sternly told that if she tried to bite a muzzle would be put on her. She got all clipped and didn't try to bite once. She squirmed a lot but never tried to bite. She showed that guy! I am glad I didn't go because I can't stand the blatant prejudice that he was showing against her. I guess it was just another day with a Pit Bull.

Put a Smile on Your Face

My Twin Sister Amber and Addie Smiling Ear-to-Ear

Kona!

Before you read about Kona's story I would like to thank Vanessa for submitting Kona for this weeks I'd Like You to Meet post. Thanks again, Vanessa!

My name is Vanessa and my best friends name is Kona. She is a rescue 3 year old female. She is good with kids and EXTREMELY loving and loyal. We take her everywhere we go, the beach, on hikes, to the pool, and family get togethers. Her favorite thing to do is cuddle but when she isn't sleeping and cuddling we rollerblade. She has tons of personality and keeps me company. My fiance is in the USMC and is gone a lot but having her makes me feel safe. I don't know what I would do with out her.

Now, how about some pictures!

Kona Vanessa and Vanessa's Fiance: Aren't they an adorable family?
Vanessa and Kona : Kona is so pretty!

He's in the USMC and has an adorable Pit Bull! What an awesome guy!

Frustrations

Sorry I haven't updated the past couple of days. I am currently at my boyfriend's parent's house. I couldn't get the internet to work and blah, blah, blah. Good news is, I am here to post!

I've titled this blog frustrations because, well, I have been having a ton of frustrations lately. My very own Pit Bull, Addie, is 9 months old and is driving me a little crazy. Don't get me wrong, I love her very much but she has been driving me crazy. She is still hyper and jumping and pulling on her leash, et cetera, et cetera. Some days she is so good and other days it is just awful. Any advice? I'd love to hear from you.

My other frustration is coming from other sources. The other day I was taking Addie for a walk as a man on bicycle rode by. He saw her and yelled to me as he was still riding, "Is that a boy?" I promptly replied, "No, she is a girl." Then he just kept riding and said she was pretty. That is not the first time I have gotten this question. I always get a little concerned when I get asked that question because I don't really know why they would want to know. Anyone else get asked those sorts of questions?

My next frustration comes from my boyfriend's grandmother. She is pretty much the queen of believing every thing she hears. I am pretty sure that she thinks Addie is going to maul us and kill us any day now. Every day that we are here is every day that I have to hear her talk badly about Addie. I will probably bite through my tongue for as much as I am going to have to bite my tongue this week.

In the near future, as in a couple of days, I am going to write another "I'd Like You to Meet" blog featuring (hopefully) one of your Pit Bulls. All you need to do is leave a comment on this entry OR you can email me at ym-dean@wiu.edu. I would love to have a couple pictures and some info about your pup; such as age, favorite things to do, tricks, funny stories, pretty much anything! I'm doing this because I hope that when the Pit Bull haters come to read they can read about NICE pit bulls with great owners, in other words real pit bulls.

A Story of Dog Fighting

Caution: The link below contains a graphic story of dog fighting accompanied by some graphic photographs. Please, read at your own risk.

A Story of Dog Fighting

I came across this on the internet several minutes ago and decided I had to blog about it. Maybe it is just me but I am physically sick by reading this. It is absolutely horrific to me. I cannot fathom, for the life of me, WHY some one would want to do this to a dog. I want to stop this from happening but I don't know how. I want to make a difference. I guess the best thing I can say is that at least we saved our Pit Bulls from ever having to go through that life. Our Pit Bulls got in the right hands and will have a long life of love and happiness. We need to find a way to stop this from happening. we need to find a way to SAVE THE PIT BULLS.

Prevent Death by Pit Bulls

Above is a link to the 2008 fatal dog bite statistics and, what a shock, our babies make up 65% of the bites. The stories on this site are horrific. The victims tend to be babies, small children, and the elderly. In no way am I trying to be disrespectful to those who lost their lives. It saddens me so much to think of something like that happening. I find that most of these horrific stories can be blamed on the owners of these attacking dogs. I am not in denial about the fact that Pit Bulls have attacked and can attacked, but I do know that a lot of why Pit Bulls attack is on the owner. Everyone owning a Pit Bull needs to monitor their do even if you think they're perfectly behaved. I monitor Addie when we're out and about and around other dogs. I am ALWAYS conscious to the way she is acting towards people. It's my job as her owner. If you notice your dog acting in a way that it shouldn't be, it is your responsibility to fix it. Don't be so stuck in denial that you can't see what's happening with your dog. I think that a lot of people don't want to believe their dog is aggressive, even if they see aggressive behaviors. Denial leads to attacks, attacks that COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED.

Side note: This isn't just for Pit Bull owners, it is for all dog owners. I think if we all keep on eye on our dogs behaviors we will have less of these fatal bites.

Most of you readers, I'm sure, already do this and have no problems. I just wanted to put my two cents in on this matter.

I'd Like You to Meet...

This is the first installment of "I'd like you to meet..." Every week I HOPE to get a chance to feature some of your pit bulls. Let me know if you want your baby to be featured.

Now, without further ado, I'd like you to meet...

Addie!

Addie is my 9 month old blue pit bull that I got in November. My boyfriend and I decided we wanted a dog but I never imagined we would get a pit bull. One day we got a call from someone saying they had free pit bulls. There were two left and they were going to be sent to the shelter if not picked up in the next hour. The decision was made pretty quickly. I will never ever forget the first time I saw her. The door opened and out ran the cutest puppy I have EVER seen. She ran straight to me and I picked her up and fell in love with her right then and there. We took her home and our life together began. There was several months of hard times with potty training, barking and hyper-ness but now that she's a little older she has calmed down a bit. She is friendly and wouldn't hurt a fly. Okay, that's a lie because she ate a fly this morning. :)

Her favorite activities are going for walks, chewing on things, sleeping, eating, and laying on me while watching her favorite TV shows; Pit Bulls and Parolees and Pit Boss which just happens to be what she is doing right now! She has taught me that Pit Bulls are not the bad animals that people make them out to be. They are sweet and loving and they just want to be loved in return.
